Chances are if you’re reading this you’ve probably heard quite a lot of talk about blogging but you’re not quite sure what it is or if it’s really something for you.

That’s why I’ve put together this little article to give you the heads up about why people blog and a few tips to get you started writing a successful blog all of your very own!

The word ‘Blog’ comes from shortening the original term ‘Web Log’.

Blogging is fast becoming one of the leading forms of communication in today’s digital world.

Anyone can create their own blog. It’s cheap, easy, fun and a great way to improve your writing skills and get yourself known and heard out there in the big old World Wide Web.

Your blog will be made up of articles that you write, varying in length depending on the message and amount of information you want to give in each particular article or post.

There are a whole load of different reasons why you might want to start a blog.

  • It might be a personal blog to let people know what it is you’ve been up to on a holiday or how you are progressing on a particular project.
  • It could be a way for you to share your knowledge about a topic that you think others will find helpful.
  • Maybe you even have a business and you want to share information with others about what your business does or the products you sell.
  • You can even use your blog to make yourself a tidy little income stream on the side.

Whatever the reason there are some key points to remember. Here are my 6 quick tips for a beginners blog.

1. Title

Your post or article title needs to be eye catching. Make sure it tells your reader exactly what information they can find in the article and how it will help them. Your title should also contain keywords to help search engine optimization. It’s best if you aim to keep the title under 10-12 words long.

2. Theme

Stick to a particular theme for your blog so that once people have found an article they like, they are more likely to read more articles in your blog that have information in them that they are interested in.

3. Frequency

Make sure you blog frequently and cover topics that are up to date and relevant to your readers. The most popular blogs these days are updated a couple of times a day. Chances are that will be a bit much when you’re starting out but if you aim to blog at least twice per week you’ll soon have quite a few articles for your readers to enjoy and get to know you.

4. Style

It’s super important that you create your own style and voice in your blog. Unlike other forms of writing, blogging can very much reflect the way you would normally talk to someone face to face. Keep the content of your blog easy to understand and avoid using jargon or acronyms that the majority of your readers just won’t understand.

5. Comments

Successful blogs work best as more of a discussion than a one sided dialogue. Give your readers the ability to comment on your blog and make sure you respond to them as well. This helps you and your readers to connect and in turn build a happy little community of readers.

6. Savvy

Be mindful of the type of content you are posting. You really don’t want to go around offending people by posting rude, confidential or unprofessional content. Also keep in mind that it is not up to you to disclose personal information about other people. Use your public voice responsibly as after all it is your personal character that is on display and once you put it out there you can’t very well take it back!

I hope you now have a bit more of an idea about blogging. It really is something that anyone can do. Keep an eye out as I will be posting more helpful articles to help you get started with a blog of your own.

Absolutely, I’m barely past being a beginner myself but it’s easy to forget just how much I have learnt in a short amount of time and there are always people out there who want to start off hearing things in a simple, non complicated format. You’re spot on, having fun with it is also the key! That’s what keeps me going, I love it 🙂
