Security Alert!

It’s everybody’s worst nightmare..

YOU’VE BEEN HACKED!

Argh can you imagine if this happened to you?

Online security is relevant to EVERYONE these days. If you use Social Media such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram just to name a few, you are at risk. If you use Email, Online Banking or even if you shop online you are at risk!

The amount of information that is on the internet about you is quite alarming to say the least and if that’s not bad enough there are people who buy and sell this information for as little as $9!!

Internet hacking is so common place now that there is even a term for it that sounds way more glamourous than it should.

Social Engineering – Social Engineers make it a sport or challenge for them to gain information from people and to then use it to gain access to all of their accounts and personal information.

Have you ever been sent one of those challenges on social media that ask you to fill out personal details about yourself such as ’10 Things You Don’t Know About Me’ or ‘What was your first Pet and Street Name’?

These are most likely to have been started by Social Engineers. Once they gain this information it is easy for them to gain access to your accounts via your Security Questions that ask for these kinds of answers.

It’s all just a little bit scary when you start to think about how often you may have given away information about yourself without even the slightest thought about what this could really mean if in the wrong hands.

Now like me you might think to yourself ‘Why would anyone target me?’

Well the answer to that is simple – People are targeted completely at random. You are just a name on a list that might just get picked.

So what can you do to keep yourself more secure?

Here’s where I can help!

As you may know from reading any of my previous blog posts, I am somewhat of a Podcast Junky.  Each day I listen to at least one podcast as it is a fantastic way to learn while I’m doing something else like getting ready in the morning or driving in my car.

One of my recent favourties is The Chalene Show. Chalene  recently recorded an awesome 5 part series on Cyber Security. This was spurred on by Chalene’s own recent horrendous hacking hell and what she went through to get it rectified!

Here are the links to the Podcasts that I urge you to listen to and find out how you might be at risk and how to stay safe online. Each of these links also take you to the show notes of the podcast.

Part 1: Passwords won’t protect you! | How to NOT be Hacked

Part 2: What You’re Doing to Invite Hackers & What to Fix First

Part 3: Simple Cyber Security

Part 4: How Your Cyber Security Knowledge is Dangerously Outdated

Part 5: How Your Smart Phone and Email are Telling Thieves How to Gain Access

I hope you have found this information helpful and if you have anything you can add from your own experiences please leave a comment in the box below.

My goal with this post is to help as many people as possible to become more aware of their online risks and what they can do to better protect themselves so please  feel free to share with the people you love and care about using the share buttons below.

Here’s to staying safe online!
