Can Your Business Grow Beyond You?
I’ve been having some great conversations with clients about the future of their businesses.
What they want to build, where they want to take it, and what needs to change to make that happen.
And it’s got me thinking about something I’ve been reflecting on in my own business, too.
Can your business grow beyond you?
When you first start a business, you’re the one who makes it happen. You do the work, make the decisions, look after your clients and keep everything moving.
As the business grows, it’s easy for everything to become built around you.
Clients rely on you. Your team comes to you for answers. Decisions wait until you get involved.
Before long, you’ve built a business that depends on your time and energy to keep running.
And that raises a bigger question.
Are you building a business that can fulfil your vision, or have you built yourself a job?
When being needed becomes part of your identity
I see this with coaches, practitioners and business owners who have built something successful but are still heavily involved in the day-to-day running of it.
They have the experience. They have the ideas. They know where they want to go.
But the business still depends on them being there to make it happen.
There’s another part of this that deserves attention.
Being needed feels good.
When everyone relies on you, you know you’re valuable. You feel useful. You feel connected to what you’ve built.
So when it comes to stepping back, handing over responsibility or letting someone else take the lead, it can bring up a bigger question:
Will I still be valuable when someone else can do what I do?
I think this is one of the biggest shifts a business owner has to make as they grow.
Your value has to extend beyond the work you personally deliver and into the business you’re creating, the people you lead and the vision you’re bringing to life.
That changes how you approach growth.
Who gets to contribute to your vision?
I often hear business owners say, “No one will care about my business as much as I do.”
And when you believe that, it shapes the people you look for, the opportunities you offer and the responsibility you’re willing to hand over.
You end up holding on to more than you need to.
But people want to contribute to something meaningful. They want their work to matter. They want to use their strengths and see the value they bring.
Building a team means creating room for that contribution.
It means looking beyond who can take tasks off your plate and considering who could help move your vision forward.
That starts with understanding what you want your business to become and recognising where your involvement is holding things together simply because that’s how they’ve always worked.
These are the conversations that open up a different way of thinking about growth.
What needs to change for your business to grow beyond you?
I’ve been asking myself these questions as I look at the next stage of my own business, and they’re the same questions I’m exploring with clients.
What do you want your business to become beyond your own delivery?
Where have you made yourself essential, and what would happen if someone else took responsibility?
Who could benefit from contributing to your vision, and what would help them take ownership?
The answers can change how you see your role in the business.
Because growing a business requires you to look beyond what you want to achieve. It requires you to consider how the business is structured, how you lead and whether the way you work today supports the future you want to create.
You’ve built something with value. The next stage is about giving it room to grow.
And that starts with looking at the role you play in making it happen.
Can your business grow beyond you?
That’s the conversation I’m exploring in Episode 160 of The Coaching Circle.
If you’re thinking about the next stage of your business, and what it will take to build something beyond your own capacity, I’d love you to listen.
