Creating Confidence to Move Forward in Life and Business
Many people believe confidence is something you’re born with, or something that will magically arrive when the timing is right. But confidence isn’t a gift that suddenly lands on you. It’s not about waiting until you “feel ready.”
Confidence is something you create and it’s one of the most important skills you can build if you want to move forward in both life and business.
Why Confidence Isn’t Something You Wait For
If you wait for confidence before you take action, you’ll be waiting forever. That’s the biggest misconception I see, people assume they need to feel confident before they start.
But confidence doesn’t come first. Action comes first. And from that action, confidence grows.
How Waiting Kills Confidence and Momentum
I often hear people say, “I just need more confidence.”
But if you hold off on making decisions, launching offers, or putting yourself out there until you feel ready, you end up stuck in “progress mode.”
The longer you wait, the more momentum you lose. And instead of building self trust, you chip away at it because every time you delay, you’re breaking a promise to yourself.
3 Keys to Building Confidence in Life and Business
Confidence is built through consistent action and follow through. Jay Shetty breaks this down into three simple but powerful principles:
1. Choose Discomfort
Growth means building new neural pathways, and that rarely feels comfortable. Every time you step into the unknown, you’ll feel resistance. The key is to anchor your actions to a bigger purpose. When the “why” matters enough, you’ll keep going even when it’s uncomfortable.
2. Keep Promises to Yourself
Confidence grows from self trust. When you follow through on what you say you’ll do, you strengthen that trust. When you delay, avoid, or put results in the hands of something external, you weaken it.
3. Competence Builds Confidence
You don’t wait to feel confident before you act, you act first. Competence comes from practice and the more competence you build, the more naturally confidence follows.
How Running My First Training Helped Me Build Confidence
I’ll never forget running my very first NLP Practitioner training back in 2016.
I’d only just completed NLP Trainers Training a little over a month before but I’d booked it and enrolled a couple of students ahead of time.
I didn’t feel confident when I started that first day of training. In fact, I was freaking out. But I had made a promise to myself and I chose to follow through.
That one decision built competence. The next time I ran the training, it was easier. And each time after that, it became more natural. From there I went on to level up to become a Master Trainer of NLP. My confidence didn’t appear out of nowhere, it grew because I acted even when I was scared.
How Public Speaking and Video Built My Confidence
The same thing happened with public speaking. I used to be absolutely terrified. To the point my legs would shake, my colour would rise and my voice waivered. But I was determined so I joined a speaking group and developed my competence.
It was similar when I first began recording video in 2015, I looked like a deer in the headlights, completely frozen. But instead of giving up, I joined a group challenge to record a video every day for 90 days.
By the end of the challenge, I could turn on the camera without a second thought. Confidence didn’t magically arrive. I created it by choosing discomfort, keeping my commitment and building competence through repetition.
Building Confidence in Life and Business
This same principle shows up in both personal development and in business.
Some people learn a new technique, attend a course, or read a book and then wait, hoping that will change their reality. Others take what they’ve learned, apply it immediately and grow while in motion.
In business, I’ve worked with clients at six, seven and even eight figures. The reason they continue to grow isn’t because they waited until they felt confident. It’s because they acted. They created while still figuring things out and confidence followed.
Meanwhile, the people who struggle most are often waiting. Waiting for the perfect plan, waiting for the right feeling, waiting for conditions to line up. But waiting kills confidence.
How to Start Creating Confidence Today
Confidence isn’t something you wait for. It’s not about waiting until you feel ready or hoping conditions will line up.
Confidence is something you create by:
Choosing discomfort and deciding you’ll handle it
Keeping promises to yourself and building self trust
Taking action and building competence through repetition
The sooner you stop waiting and start creating, the faster your confidence and your results will grow.
